118th Congress Legislative Update:
June 2024

NON-FEDERAL MOMENT

Crime Victims Fund Stabilization Act Introduced

The Crime Victims Fund Stabilization Act (S.4514/H.R. 8061) was introduced in both the House and the Senate.

The bill would ensure additional funding is deposited into the Crime Victims Fund (CVF) by diverting surplus funds collected through the False Claims Act, which currently go to the General Fund of the U.S. Treasury, to the CVF through FY2029. The CVF supports victim compensation and assistance programs and has faced a significant decline in deposits over the last few years, leaving programs at risk of closing their doors permanently.

Take Action HERE to urge your Senators to cosponsor the Crime Victims Fund Stabilization Act to ensure victim compensation and assistance programs have the support they need.

United States v. Rahimi

On June 21, the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the federal statute that prohibits individuals subject to a domestic violence restraining order from possessing a firearm. Last year, NIWRC filed an amicus brief as part of our VAWA Sovereignty Initiative, urging the Court to uphold these protections to keep abusers from accessing guns.

May 5 National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) Resolutions and Presidential Proclamation Introduced

U.S. Senators Steve Daines (R-MT) and Jon Tester (D-MT) introduced S.Res 674, a resolution to designate May 5, 2024 as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls, which passed in the Senate by Voice Vote.

Representatives Dan Newhouse (R-WA-4) and Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ-7) also introduced H.Res.1177, a resolution to designate May 5, 2024 as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Native Women and Girls.

President Biden signed a Presidential Proclamation for May 5, 2024 as Missing or Murdered Indigenous Persons Awareness Day.
