NIWRC Opposes Anti-Transgender Legislation, Legislators

The National Indigenous Women’s Resource Center (NIWRC) vehemently condemns transphobic, anti-women legislation demonstrating a complete and reprehensible disregard for our nation’s most vulnerable. We oppose these hateful policies that lead to death and violence. It is our mission to end violence against Native women, which is meant to not be limited to colonial western standards of gender, and is inclusive of our transgender, non-binary, and Two-Spirit (2S+) relatives. Greetings Relatives,

As we shift into springtime, may we seed and water the lessons learned from recent years. On April 28, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Dr. Tedros stated in a media briefing,

“An estimated 1 in 10 infections results in post COVID-19 condition, suggesting that hundreds of millions of people will need longer-term care. And XBB.1.16 variant illustrates the virus is still changing and is still capable of causing new waves of disease and death.”

During the media briefing, the WHO also announced the launch of its “Preparedness and Resilience for Emerging Threats Initiative,” or PRET. This initiative takes an integrated approach to pandemic planning and focuses on respiratory pathogens. PRET is designed to promote collaboration between countries and sectors as pandemics affect economies, education, trade, travel, food supply systems, and more.

This month, a second bivalent booster has been approved for those over 65 or immunocompromised.

A reported 1,052 Americans died the week of April 12. On April 10, President Biden signed into law H.J. Res 7, which terminates the National COVID-19 Emergency. On May 11, the CDC is expected to stop reporting its color-coded COVID-19 Community levels to track the spread of infection and switch to monitoring hospitalizations, which are a lagging indicator of spread. To access county-level wastewater data (scroll down to “Filter by State to View Counties”) may provide more detailed information about your local COVID-19 situation.

The Biden administration also pitched to Congress in the fiscal 2024 budget request,  $130 million for the Health and Human Services Department for Long COVID programs and $130 million for Indian Health Services to treat and diagnose Long COVID in 2025.

The FDA hosted a webinar featuring public feedback on patient-focused drug development for Long COVID. Here is a link to the webcast recording featuring the voices of those living with Long COVID.
